What’s an EP? When’s the Album coming out?

An EP music-people jive for a *short album, the Capstone EP features many of the songs that will be featured on the album. But the album it self will have about ten more tracks, and plenty of alternative versions, guest stars,  and remixes. You can expected the Capstone LP in late 2009.

*Usually, a single has around 10–28 minutes of music, an EP has up to 36 minutes, and an album generally has 30–80 minutes.

The BAckstory

The process for writing Capstone started about a year ago when I was in Oakland for the summer. I had just come back from Accra, Ghana where I had studied abroad for four months, and I was wondering whether or not I had an album in me, wondering whether or not I was going to continue being an artist at all. So I set the goal for myself that I would write a verse a day, and song a week. However by the end of the summer I had nothing, so I quit.

As soon as I quit, I started to write. I wrote about 80% of what you hear on this EP in about one week. The Capstone EP is about realizing the insecurities that you get when facing your dreams, and finding the balls (and the audacity) to think that you can actually do it. The lyrics came first, but to make the music I wanted to do something I had never done before.

When I got back to New York I linked up with Mitch Friedman, a classically trained double-bassist with a love of P-Bass funk. We had been performing together in a band called Beggars and Scholars which had recently broken up. Mitch was trying to get some tunes that had been floating around in his head recorded, and I had my hundreds of hours of studio time coming up for my senior thesis project. So we assembled the team.

When it came to drums, the choice was obvious. Isaac Teel, better known as Funknasty has been tearing down the skins at Sin-Sin Open Mics since I got to New York. In a world of emcees, djs, singers and poets, he has made a name for himself by his charsimatic playing that can only be explained as bad-assedness. I introduced Mitch to Sin-Sin the year before, and the two had slowly been developing a bromance.

We started jamming in September ‘08 with Geron Caldwell, a gifted keyboardist from Staten Island. We recorded for about 3 months, and put together what was then, the foundation of the album. The tragedy struck.

My Hard drive died

I lost all of the songs.

*Tip to future songwriters, always always always back up your work. You should have TWO external hard drives, and NEVER EVER EVERRRRRR buy LaCie

Spring came and I was pretty planning out Let the Beat Build with 194 Recordings and Last Pictures. By late Spring I was running ragged making sure I was going to graduate planning my big show with Kidz in the Hall, 88 Keys, and DJ Peter Rosenberg. My peoples at Springshot (who also promoted the show along with 194) threw up the video and it went viral almost instantly. It seemed like everytime I opened my laptop there was a new blog, that I never thought would show the video adding it up. There was no doubt that this was the big break I needed, but there was one problem. The music wasn’t ready.

With all of my studio time spent, I set back to re-record the album in early 2009, this time with Daniel Mensch. I met Daniel aka D. Sig when he saved my butt by filling in for keys at a concert/jam/bbq/party that I had at Lake Johnson. The sound was so ill that we invited him to take permanent residencey with the band, but that was just the start of things. Dan was also a closet producer, he had an MPC, Technic 1200’s, Rhodes mic, a nice interface and dozens upon dozens upon dozens of beats. Dan ended up tracking out, and putting the finishing touches on most of the EP in his bedroom using Logic.

I would have loved for the project that I present to you today to have been finished months ago, but though the album was done, it wasn’t good enough. I refuse to put out half-assed music, cause as I see it I only get one chance to see if you like it or not. Hopefully you do. This is sincere music from the bottom of my heart, its silly, its fun, and its introspective. Its hipster hop, emo, golden era 93, booty-core, back packer, gangsta, concious, ignit but above all HIP HOP music.

I hope you like it.

-Nyle

  14. Daniel Murphy says:

Maybe EP albums are shorter than regular albums, but they stand for Extended Play, where the songs are extended cuts and longer than the original song. They are actually released after the original album. So I would have to say you’re not entirely correct in your definition of EP Albums.

    Good music though.
